Product Description
The Soundmatters foxLmb(tm) is the world's first pocket-sized portable stereo speaker system that good enough for an audio purist...the "mb" version adds the features of Bluetooth music streaming and a built-in microphone for hands-free/conferencing. Sound+Vision Magazine says when measured up-close (as one for listening), foxL's response "... looks like that of a well-engineered, $2,000-per-pair bookshelf speaker." Powered by its built-in lithium ion battery, a included wall-charger, or USB connection, fox provides shockingly good fidelity (and bass) for it's size. It battery actually doubles as a bass woofer (patent-pending) and it's patented "Twoofer" drivers are built much like an audiophle tweeter with the twist that they can also woof. foxL was designed by physicist, former NASA engineer and audio design legend Dr Godehard Guenther. Accepts Bluetooth music streaming (from A2DP- equipped devices) AND stereo 3.5mm audio signals. Built-in microphone with noise and echo canceling DSP circuitry. Battery life up to 5 hours. Dimensions: 5.6" x 2.2" x 1.4". Weighs 9.5 oz.

4 out of 5 stars Sound does matter..   September 23, 2009

This is an amazing little speaker. The only reason i did not give it 5 stars was the price. I still believe it is worth the money...but for the price point a nice hard protective travel case should be included. The only other thing you have to watch out for is the on/off button...if you forget to switch it off the battery drains completely. Other than that this thing kicks a@@!!! The bass is so booming that the speaker will walk its way off the table if you are not careful. The bluetooth function is convenient but there is a noticeable difference in fidelity but it is still nice to go completely wireless at times. To sum this up...it's incredibly small...it's incredibly expensive...and it sounds incredible!!!!

5 out of 5 stars So small and yet so good   August 28, 2009

Now it may seem that I can not be fair when I review the foxL since I do work for soundmatters, but I am also a snobbish, skeptical audio person, and I would not give a good review to a product I did not like. When I was first introduced to the foxL I looked at it and I thought "who would buy this"? I was thinking that the target audience was the college age Ipod listener, and how could they afford something like this. Then I got to listen to the foxL. And not just listen, but listen in a convention environment with the foxL being played for many people at one time. I got to see the reactions of people who have sold and owned some pretty high end audio equipment through the years, I got to see the smile of satisfaction when the sound came out of this pencil box sized powered speaker system. Then I got to take one back to my hotel room where I lay on the bed with my laptop on my chest playing a movie, and the foxL on my chest playing the sound. Then I saw the value of the foxL. You can have truly excellent sound that travels with you wherever you want it to. You can keep it in your pocket it is so small. And if you do want to use it like I did for watching a movie, you will be surprised at the range of motion you get in the soundtrack. Now the foxL is absolutely only for close range listening if you want to have the full quality of sound, but it will give you clean pleasant sound if you want music playing in a room to keep you company. I do not use the Bluetooth function because Bluetooth audio is not very good at its very best, so I can only tell you that when I have this wired up to my MP3 player, or more usually to my computer, I am very happy.

5 out of 5 stars A little bit tricky, but wonderful!   April 18, 2009

First of all, I have to praise Soundmatters for customer service. The unit I received seemed to be defective and rectifying that was easy and quick, and Jim at Soundmatters was friendly and apologetic about it.

Second, I have to say that this thing sounds way better than it should for its size. I replaced a Tivoli Model One with the foxL, and the sound quality is definitely comparable. Occasionally, the midrange seems a bit drowned out by the highs and lows, but usually it sounds great. I have a lot of audiophile equipment that is in storage right now because I can't fit it in my apartment easily. I'm not going to lie and say that this thing sounds like my 'real' collection of gear, but I will say that I care a lot about music, I have a pretty good ear for things, and the foxL definitely pleases my ears. It's beyond my comprehension how good this thing sounds compared to any other speaker in its size range. You can tell the foxL was seriously engineered and not just a collection of off-the-shelf parts.

Soundmatters recommends charging it overnight for the best sound. I'm used to amplifiers having a 'warm-up' period, before the sound really reaches its potential, yet I've never heard anything as dramatic as the foxL's. At first it sounds a bit muddy and washed out, but after the charge period it really livens up. Follow this recommendation.

I mention in my title that it's 'a little bit tricky,' and by that I only mean the Bluetooth interface. I own a lot of Bluetooth devices and this one seems the most finicky to use. You have one button, which you either press or hold, and you have to pay attention to cues from a series of beeps to the flashing LED on the front. It's not particularly hard, but it does have some little tricks to it and it may take a couple of times. It also doesn't seem to remember pairing info for more than one device, as a lot of BT headset-profiles do. That is, if I want to switch between Bluetooth streaming from my Mac to my phone or vice-versa, I have to go through the pairing process from the top again. However, if you're staying on one device and you disconnect/reconnect, there should be no trouble. Also, the sound quality from Bluetooth is definitely passable, though not as good as a wired connection, and you'll start to experience skipping after a couple of hours on the battery.

Additionally, the unit simply seems to have occasional flukes - when switching from Bluetooth to a wired connection, I've had one channel cut out. A simple power off/on fixed this right up. None of the little issues I've had with this device are able to overshadow how amazing of a product it really is. I really didn't have faith that something so tiny would sound any better than, say, laptop speakers. Yet the foxL does. Obviously you can't get great stereo separation from it - you notice the stereo effect but it sounds awkward like a surround system, not like a proper stereo set-up. Yet even this isn't upsetting enough to even make me drop it down to four stars. It's a really well-engineered product, and anybody who is skeptical of a unit this size will truly be amazed. I love the foxL.

3 out of 5 stars It could be better   April 9, 2009

I was initially impressed by this when I attached it to my laptop as the sound was dramatically better than any laptop speaker you will ever find and truly did fill the room. I was also initially impressed when I attached it to my iphone. However, because of my listening preference which includes sharp and low bass tones, it really did not do so well with the bass. The mids and highs came out was clear and sharp, but whenever the bass hit I would get more distortion than I would expect for something in the $250 range. The bluetooth is a cool feature, but this product simply had too much distortion for my taste.

I would highly recommend this product if low hitting bass is not part of your daily listening as it is very crisp and sharp. The best solution I could offer is if they had a manual tuner on the product itself which allowed you to reduce the bass and adjust the tone. For $250 I don't think that would be unreasonable. If they did that this would be the best portable speaker ever.
