4 out of 5 stars Great Bluetooth   August 30, 2010
Ev
This Sony bluetooth is incredible. It has very good sound for a bluetooth headphone. At first I was a little aprehensive about purchasing any headphones with bluetooth tech but, after trying several other brands I found this one on Amazon. After reading some of the reviews I decided to give it a try. Sure enough I was blown away. I would give it five stars but,the only problem I have is the latency or the synching with watching some movies. Some movies are just fine. However, I can live with that bit of annoyance. So, this Sony product is worth the money if you can live with that little bit of flaw.

4 out of 5 stars great but not wonderful   August 15, 2010

The sound quality and level is as good as it gets for being bluetooth, much much better than many corded earphones. the only thing that left me to desire was for the controls for skipping songs to work on my iphone, volume works, voice control works, phone calls work ok, though no skipping nor fast forward, no worries, i still recommend it without a doubt for the sound quality is great.
If sony ever wants to improve it they should work on improving noise canceling and skipping controls.

3 out of 5 stars Great sound, but could be a lot more comfortable ...   August 6, 2010

I think the sound quality is terrific. Not quite as good as the Sony MDR-V6 phones, but certainly adequate for listening to music while you're at the office. The charge lasts a long time as well. Unfortunately, the ear cups are smaller than they need to be. I have average size ears, and they hurt after awhile, because the space inside the phones is too small. The seal is good, so it also gets pretty warm. On average, I can wear them for about 30 minutes at a time, and then I need to take them off. By that time, they just plain hurt. The build quality is average. Mostly plastic. But as long as you treat them reasonably gently, they should last a long time. They also fold up nicely into a pretty small package (which is probably helped by the small ear cup size - but for me that is not a good tradeoff). Finally, I have had very mixed reviews on voice quality through the mike when using these with my cell phone. I get much, much better mike quality reports when I use the stereo Plantronics Voyager 855, which is tiny compared to the Sony (it is in-ear). It is also a lot less expensive. The tradeoff is that the sound quality is nothing like the Sony - more like an AM radio. It's OK, but if you like hi-fi, that's not it. I wish there was something out there that had the mike quality of the Plantronics, with the sound quality of the Sony!

3 out of 5 stars Wireless vs. Sound Quality - Can't have both   July 25, 2010

I've had these headphones for a few months now. I bought them due to the fantastic reviews about the superior sound quality over other bluetooth (and even wired) headphones. I'm an audiophile, and I've experimented with other Bluetooth headphones--and though I've been consistently disappointed, I figured the technology might have come around to yield a pair of high-quality wireless headphones.

Well, has it? Yes--and no.

One reviewer here or on another site said these are studio DJ-quality headphones. That reviewer obviously never listened to studio DJ-quality headphones. Are these headphones much better than your average $35 bluetooth headsets? Yes. But don't expect to be testing tracks with these. If you're a serious audiophile, you will hear that high pitches or cymbal crashes get crackly. The bass is good, but you will hear the difference of how these headphones interpret electronic music to rock music (heavy metal fans might be disappointed with bands that use a wide range of sounds). And here's the other thing: no matter how good the quality of your headphones actually are, you're still listening to them via bluetooth. It's like radio--through even the best pair of speakers, it still sounds like radio. You *will* get interference. You will get static. I've experienced sound problems when I had my bluetooth phone next to me (I eventually disabled it), or when I had my external hard-drives running. God help you if you're in a cafe near a microwave, which will cause the sound to cut out completely. If you are looking for complete consistency in your listening experience, don't get these. If you don't care that much and just want to get wireless, you'll probably be fine. You might even find that you love them. It's a question of how much you care about the sound quality versus the wireless factor.

The usability of these headphones is also a downside. Getting them to sync up (I use them primarily with a MacBook Pro) is a pain. It took me awhile to figure out that the headphones are actually connected to the computer, even though the Bluetooth icon doesn't read a transmission signal. Once you've got the hang of it, it's fine, but it always feels like a touch-and-go situation. I've had them desync on me for no apparent reason, causing me to turn them off and on again multiple times to get them to re-sync and start playing again.

In closing, the fact that Sony originally priced these at $200 is laughable. If you're shelling out that kind of money for sound quality, get a real pair of wired studio phones. While the construction and comfort factor on these things is great, they should be in the $75-$100 range, no more. After a certain point, if you're buying headphones for the wireless factor, consider how badly you want good sound quality. It might be worth it to get a cheaper pair if you don't care that much. That said, if you really need the "best" of both worlds (more like the above-average of both worlds, in this case) than these are probably about as good as it's going to get.
