4 out of 5 stars Yes they crack get them anyways, here's how to fix or prevent ...   July 6, 2006

I would give this a 4.5 star but because of having to repair the headset myself it looses a star. Let me start by saying that these headphones work great. They are discontinued now so jump on your favorite auction site and buy a brand new set for $45 like I did. Buy a couple of sets if you can while the getting is good. Even with the faulty headband they are well worth the money because I will tell you how to repair or prevent them from breaking in the first place. The sound quality is top notch and nothing beats having wireless headphones...

So anyways onto the repair... Even if your headband has broken in two this will still work. It will only take a little patience and $5.00 of materials from a local hobby shop.

Materials:
- 3/4 inch or 1 inch nylon tape (all hobby stores that have RC Plane materials have this)
- CA (cyanoacrylate) the stuff that superglue is made of but I recommend getting some real CA at any hobbystore. Get the "thin" stuff.
- saran wrap. yes the sandwich stuff...
- Scissors

Side note: I call the nylon tape "tape", but it is really just a ribbon of nylon. There is no sticky stuff on the "tape"

1) First if your headset has snapped completely in two use a little CA to mend it as best as you can. It doesnt need to be perfect but just mended enough that it is technically one piece again and headphones are seperated to where you want them to be.

2) Next cut off a 6 inch piece of the nylon tape and using a VERY small amount of CA, tack the top edge of the tape to the BACK of the band where the crack has occured (which should be exactly in the middle of the band in most cases). Use just enough so it sticks as you don't want too much CA getting into the ribbon. It should be hanging down now in the back like a tail. Note: Use the saran wrap to help hold the tape in place as you are tacking it in place as you DO NOT want this stuff to get on your fingers...

3) Once the CA has dried enough and the tape is stuck, wrap the tape under and around the band one time until the tape is hanging down again in the back. Pull the tape VERY tight and use a little bit of CA at the top to keep it in place.

4) Wrap around one more time and tack it again one more time. You should have wrapped the tape around twice at this point. If your set was broken completely in two you may want to wrap one or two more times and at a slight angle to cover a little more area. When done, use some scissors to cut off the tape at a point so the cut end of the tape is at the back.

5) Now you can saturate the whole band of tape with CA. This will create an incredibly strong patch. Use the saran wrap to press down the cut end of the tape as you glue and it will end up perfectly flat.

There you have it. This is a permanent and SOLID fix and only takes about 5 minutes. I'm wearing mine right now after i just fixed them. Also you can do this (and I strongly suggest you do) to a set that has not cracked yet, because they WILL NOT CRACK if you do. Just do it exactly in the middle of the band.

Hope this helps all you fellow people that had problems with the headband. They work too well to just give up on them. If you have never done something like this before you can practice on something like a pencil. Break it in half, then mend it with the above procedure. Once you get the hang of it go for it.

Russ

5 out of 5 stars Good only for people with little heads!   November 30, 2005

If you have a big head or are very active when using the headphones, these are not the headphones for you. Dont even think about taking them on a jog. They brake very easily. The cheap plastic band brakes and this is very hard to repair. Otherwise, the headphones are perfect. Also, if you try to connect to anything that is not HP you will have problems. Its pheaseable however hard.

3 out of 5 stars Very convenient but crappy reception and faulty headband   June 10, 2005

I was reluctant to buy these headphones with the high pricetag but loved the idea of utilizing the bluetooth capability of my ipaq. When I first took the headphones out of the package, I was immediately dissapointed with the reception. For the most part the audio signal was chopping with any sort of movement (walking, running, on the treadmill, ect..). Listening to the headphones at my desk was fine with minimal movement and the sound quality was better than my other headphones ($20 sony's). Before buying the headphones, I read a review online that warned against the faulty headband. I blew the review off, thinking that the user must have abused their set. To my dismay, my headband also broke several months after purchase. The bluetooth antenna is built into the headband and will not function well when the headband is broken. Overall, I would not recommend buying these headphones until they fix the reception and headband issues.

5 out of 5 stars The ONLY way to listen to music on your iPaq   April 20, 2005

So I bought a pair of these about a month ago. All in all, I like them a lot and would buy them again.

The good:
*The fact that they are completely cordless is amazing. That alone makes these worth every penny. I can't count how many times in the past my hand has snagged a cord and flung my device across the room. I don't have to worry about this anymore! Also, it's nice to not have a cord slapping against the side of your body. The feeling is almost "liberating".

*They have controls on the right-hand side of the headphones themselves. The controls are play/pause, track forward/back, and volume up/down. The volume up/down buttons control the volume on the headphones themselves so they will work with any player (gsplayer, etc). The other buttons will only work with Windows Media Player. The beauty of this is that you can put your device in your pocket or bag and not have to pull it out if you want to pause or change the song/volume... because let's face it - when you pull out an iPod, everyone swoons, but when you pull out your iPaq, most people cringe. With these headphones, you won't have to pull it out at all - it's just slick. Another thing about this - there ARE other bluetooth headphones out there, but (currently) these seem to be the only ones that don't require their own bluetooth receiver to be plugged into your device. Your iPaq is enough of a bulge-in-the-pocket, IMHO.

*They are quite compact, for what they are. When you think about a device which combines decent-quality headphones, an internal bluetooth chipset/radio/antenna, and a battery to power them all for ~5 hours, you'd typically envision something bulky and ugly - but these aren't much fatter than your standard behind-the-head headphones.

*They come with an additional charger, so when you're not charging your headphones you can charge your iPaq. A nice touch if you were planning on getting a second charger anyway.

The Bad:
*They are slightly more heavy than regular headphones, and it makes them uncomfortable for any use beyond a couple hours(depending on the hardiness of your ear).

*They are virtually unsupported by HP - It is difficult to find any mention of them on the HP website itself, and I have heard that nobody in customer service even knows that they exist.

*I have heard many reports that the headband cracks after several months of use, and that HP will blame you if you call them - as if you would sit there and intentionally bend the headphones until they broke, just for fun.

*Sometimes they are hard to get to pair with the iPaq. Pair them and play with the settings a bit, and all you should have to do to connect them is this: Enable BT on your device, open up WMP, press the center button on the headphones for ~2seconds to get them to turn on, then press the button once to re-connect them(it will play a short confirmation sound), then press the center button again to start playback. It sounds confusing now, but once you get used to it, you can get them paired and playing in about the same time that someone would take to pull out their corded headphones, untangle them, plug them in, and play a song.

*On MY device (iPaq 6315), they are not "supported". They installed easily and work great, but I hear small pops and distortions every once in a while. My speculation is that the 168MHz processor on the 6315 has a hard time keeping up with mp3 playback AND bluetooth transmission at the same time. For me, I can live with this shortcoming, but if you want perfection you might want to use it with a device that has more horsepower. I have gotten them to connect with my computer, and they sound awesome.

*Initially I thought these to be expensive, but after seeing other similar items that are selling for twice as much, and experiencing how much they change the experience of music-listening, I can say they are definitely worth it.
